MOY, hZHARD h/I. Renal junction in the hibernating ground squirrel Spermophilus columbianus. Am. J. Physiol. 220(3) : 747-753. 1971. -A tissue-slice analysis showed no solute gradient of urea and sodium from the corticomedullary boundary through the papilla of torpid Columbian ground squirrels. Ground squirrels arousing normally from torpor and sacrificed 15 or 40 min after urine began to flow into a catheterized ureter had distinct renal solute gradients of urea and sodium, whereas arousing squirrels sacrificed before onset of urine flow possessed no such renal gradient. Active homeothermic squirrels, dehydrated 9-l 3 hr, were induced to evacuate the urinary bladder 30 min prior to sacrifice to obtain urine samples. The papillary tissue fluid to urine (TF/U bladder) ratio of urea of these dehydrated homeotherms was consistently less than unity, whereas a similar ratio (TF/U catheter) of arousing urine formers was consistently greater than unity suggesting that squirrels can reabsorb and regulate urea more efficiently during arousal than when dehydrated. No renal potassium gradient existed at any ttime in the ground squirrel. The urea, sodium, and potassium concentrations of plasma did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) at any time.

Spermophilus xanthoprymnus (Rodentia: Sciuridae)

Spermophilus xanthoprymnus (Bennett, 1835), the Asia Minor ground squirrel, is a group-living, diurnal, obligately hibernating marmotine squirrel. It inhabits the steppes and alpine meadows throughout central lowland and eastern highland Anatolia and adjacent Armenia and northwestern Iran. Its preferred elevation appears to range from about 800 to 2,900 m. The species displays sexual dimorphism...

Ground Squirrel and Prairie Dog Control in Montana

The Columbian ground squirrel (Spermophilus columbianus), Richardson ground squirrel (Spermophilus richardsoni), and blacktail prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) cause millions of dollars of loss to Montana agriculture each year. Montana's ground squirrel and prairie dog control programs are based upon local organization and operation with technical assistance being provided by the Montana Depa...

Pancreatic triacylglycerol lipase in a hibernating mammal. II. Cold-adapted function and differential expression.

Thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus) exploit the low-temperature activity of pancreatic triacylglycerol lipase (PTL) during hibernation. Lipolytic activity at body temperatures associated with hibernation was examined using recombinant ground squirrel and human PTLs expressed in yeast. Both the human and ground squirrel enzymes displayed high activity at temperatures ...

Determination of the Environmental Fate of Ground Squirrel Carcasses

A field study was conducted in Lewis and Clark County, Montana, during the summer of 1986 to determine the fate of Columbian ground squirrel (Spermophilus columbianus) carcasses in the environment. Ground squirrel carcasses were marked with radio transmitters and placed in situations and locations similar to those found in actual rodent control operations. Carcasses were monitored until their f...

Increased Na+/Ca2+ Exchanger Activity Promotes Resistance to Excitotoxicity in Cortical Neurons of the Ground Squirrel (a Hibernator)

Ground squirrel, a hibernating mammalian species, is more resistant to ischemic brain stress than rat. Gaining insight into the adaptive mechanisms of ground squirrels may help us design treatment strategies to reduce brain damage in patients suffering ischemic stroke. To understand the anti-stress mechanisms in ground squirrel neurons, we studied glutamate toxicity in primary cultured neurons ...
